Addict: A Bold, Unapologetic Display Font
What It Does — and Doesn’t — Do Well
- ✅ Brilliant for short phrases, quotes, invitations, and merchandise prints — especially uppercase settings where its structural confidence reads instantly.
- ✅ Effective in web design headers (H1/H2), blog graphics, and email subject lines — if used sparingly and with generous line height.
- ❌ Not built for paragraphs, captions, or UI labels. Even at 20px, readability degrades fast — the tight spacing and high contrast fatigue the eye over length.
- ❌ Avoid using it for anything requiring warmth, approachability, or neutrality — it won’t soften your brand voice; it’ll sharpen it.
Practical Designer Notes — Tested, Not Assumed
- Test in black and white only — no color tricks. If it loses clarity or hierarchy without hue, it’s not ready.
- Check small-size readability — render it at 14px on screen and 8pt printed. If the ‘r’, ‘n’, and ‘m’ blur together, don’t use it below headline scale.
- Mock it up on real surfaces — try it on kraft paper, brushed metal, and translucent vellum. Its sharpness can turn brittle or overly clinical depending on substrate.
- Compare case treatments — uppercase Addict reads tighter and more commanding; lowercase feels more editorial and nuanced. Don’t assume one fits all contexts.
- Review spacing rigorously — default tracking often needs +20–40 units for headlines, -10 for tight lockups. Kerning pairs like ‘AV’, ‘To’, and ‘Wa’ need manual adjustment.
- Pair deliberately — Addict sings beside a sturdy serif (like Literata or Crimson Text) for contrast in editorial design, or a neutral sans serif (like Manrope or Söhne) for brand systems. Avoid pairing it with another display font or script font — the visual competition dilutes impact.
- Confirm commercial licensing — Addict is a commercial font. Verify usage rights cover your client’s distribution scope: e-commerce assets, SaaS interfaces, physical merchandise, and resale of design assets like Canva templates or printable design kits.
